Chapter 11
“What the hell did you do?” I hissed, trying to keep my voice low lest I wake Tris.
Marsha shrugged. “You said you wouldn’t leave unless we had proof. So, here’s our proof.”
“And what happened to not doing something rash?” I scoffed. “How did you even get her tied up like that?” Marsha opened his mouth, but I put my hand up. “Wait, I’m not sure I want to know. The important thing is to put her back in her bed and pretend like none of this ever happened.”
“What?” Marsha dropped the rope and stomped toward me. “After all I went through to get her, now you want to just drop it?”
I shook my head. “I’m trying to think rationally here. How were you planning on getting her out of here?” I waved my arms around the room and then pointed to the window. “It’s not exactly a short drop.”
“We’ll go out through the servant’s corridors.” Marsha crossed his arms over his chest, a stubborn tilt to his chin.
“And what do you do when someone stops us?” I gestured to Tris. “She’s not exactly easy to explain.”
“I’ll figure it out if it happens.” Marsha stepped closer to me until we were only a foot apart. “The problem isn’t getting out of the Core, it’s why are you suddenly stalling. I thought you wanted to get out of here. Warn people of what’s happening.”
“I did. I mean, I do.” I stomped my foot. “It’s not that easy to just up and leave. There are things in place—”
“No, there’s not.” Marsha cut me off. “There’s nothing in place that you can’t get away from. Unless ...” Marsha stepped back and spun around the room. “You’re too attached to this. Being treated like a queen. Here you mean something but back in the Inner Ring, you’re less than nobody. Just the little girl from the Glade doesn’t belong here or anywhere. Or maybe it’s not about who you are here at all but about who is here.”
My mouth dropped open, and I couldn’t find the words to defend myself.
Marsha moved closer again his eyes locked on mine. “Is that it, Elle? Have you been ensnared by the monster of the castle? Is that why you don’t want to leave?”
“No, of course not,” I snapped, my face heating up against my better judgment.
“It is.” Angry flashed across Marsha’s face. “You don’t want to leave your precious Patrick.”
“You don’t know what you are talking about,” I tried to argue, even though part of me agreed with him. I didn’t want to leave him, but I knew I couldn’t stay.
“Well, you can’t have it both ways, Elle. Either you are with the humans or with him.”
“He’s not like the others. And neither is Asher.” I shook my head. “You can’t just lump them all together.”
“They’re all the same. Don’t you see, Elle?” Marsha grabbed me by the arms. “They’re monsters. They prey on our kind and somebody has to stop them before they kill all of us.
